Roger Tu believes teachers must be able to develop relationships with students and have a responsibility to nurture them into the citizens of the world. Teachers must develop skills alongside the knowledge and must connect these to real world applications. Expectations should be set high but the learning must be broken into manageable steps and there needs to be grace in the learning process. Teaching and instructing the students in the subject areas are only part of the job. Challenging them to strive to be better and to make a difference in their community is also an important aspect of teaching.
He is a very diligent and creative teacher who is able to use the experiences of the student and common analogies to explain concepts and have designed activities for the purposes of teaching concepts and for reinforcing understanding. He analyzes and corrects student misconceptions in order for the student to gain a better understanding and readily communicate with students to assist them in their learning and growth. His courses incorporate student reflection on their learning, with a particular focus on correcting and learning from their mistakes. It is in this vein that he challenges his students with integrated problems that force them to see how the concepts can be connected with each other, especially within his AP Chemistry course. His AP curriculum is a mix of the new curriculum and the old curriculum because he believes that the course should not only prepare his students for the AP examination but also fully prepare them for university. He also has experience teaching IGCSE Physics and IGCSE and IB Chemistry and working with CAS students.
